The Benefits of Developing a Writing Habit

Making anything part of our day-to-day takes careful thought, strategy, and planning. Even months after committing to weekly writing time, people struggle. Words are powerful, and decisions about what to say, how, and in what order and tone are nuanced. For anyone interested in a simple writing routine that works, consider jumping in with these achievable starting-points:

  1. Create a dedicated space large or small, that is welcoming, set up, and ready for you.

  2. Take an hour to set up a Medium account, LinkedIn account and Reddit account. Five Medium publications listed here offer support, advice, and visibility to writers at every level, and are very welcoming of writers who are new to Medium and the Medium publication process: Feedium, Illumination, Better Advice, and The Startup.

  3. Pick a Monday and earmark a two-week period to write 20 minutes a day. Write 300 words minimum and PUSH PUBLISH every weekday for two weeks. At this stage, masterpieces are not required.

  4. Add five tags to each of your 300-word posts.

  5. Post each of ten 300-word posts you’ve produced to Medium, LinkedIn or Reddit. That’s it! Easy, breezy, achievable, effective, and real.

Check out Feedium, a publication about writing, blogging, and best ways to navigate Medium; Illumination which features articles from diverse domains including poetry, philosophy, and business; Better Advice, a publication that focuses on life lessons and personal development; the strategy and design publication The Startup, or hundreds of other new writer/beginner-friendly Medium publications.

Set up your space, apply to be a publication contributor, and write a 300-word article every weekday for two weeks. Good luck on this exciting adventure and happy writing!
