Simplicity.

The word itself is beautiful.

Simplicity can be an element of style. A health measure. A mindset. A philosophy for living.

The word may bring particular images or atmosphere to mind. Definitions of simplicity include:

  1. Simplicity is an uncluttered state, quality, or condition.

  2. Simplicity is freedom from complexity and artless ornament.

  3. Simplicity is the highest form of elegance.

Simplicity suggests relaxation and ease. What types of ease? Ease perhaps in the way we dress, speak, live, and interact. Ease in the way we make decisions, spend time, and arrange personal belongings and the spaces we occupy. What steps might lead to greater simplicity in life?

  • For some, simplicity is about paring down possessions and decluttering work and personal living spaces.

  • For others, simplicity is about taming overly-busy days and minds.

  • For still others, simplicity is related to replacing time-stealing habits with more intentional ways of being.

What can happen when we live more simply? We may spend less. We may recover space and time. We may improve our energy-level, our health, peace, and quality of life. Taking a breath and proceeding with simplicity can lead to enormous personal, professional, and life benefits.

Turning Toward Simplicity

Simplifying life is about making space, and pairing away distraction. It’s about cleaning up relationships, clutter, and the ways we use time. Achievable steps toward simplicity include:

  • Take stock, and pledge new-found focus on what matters.

  • Focus on what you’re creating rather than what you’re eliminating.

  • Curb time spent with electronics, television, and social media.

  • Beware of an always-busy mind. Before you rise for the day and set your duty/work mode in motion, sit. Take two minutes to note quiet and what’s good with clear mind and open perception.

  • Note ongoing, constant motion and doing.

  • Become particular about what you bring into your home.

Look at what’s currently filling your time. Look at what’s currently filling your schedule, your days. What if you removed an obligation or commitment that is no longer a good fit? What can you create by living more simply just for one day? This day?

Simplicity is about relaxation, clarity, and ease. Ease perhaps in what we have, what we do, our areas of focus, and how we present ourselves. Simplicity can be a way of dressing, a way of setting up our living space, a way of taking in and responding to the world. Focus on what we create each day with an eye on simplicity, and watch the benefits flow.
